Outriders,discovered an Easter Egg dedicated to the Dragon Age series

Outriders isn’t as silly as its pedigree suggests. The game was developed by People Can Fly — and their stories are usually much less straight-laced than Outriders. Naturally, this sci-fi adventure about super-powered people blasting hundreds of bad guys is still packed with tongue-in-cheek humor, but it isn’t nearly as overt this time around. Outriders is available now, and with the servers now infinitely more stable than they were at launch, more players are hopping in to explore the dangers of Enoch. The character’s name is an obvious reference to two Dragon Age characters, Alistair and Cullen, but there’s a much deeper meaning hiding just below the surface.

Both Templars had their dose of prominence, but from People Can Fly they have not wanted this reference to be testimonial, but they have given true meaning to the Easter egg.

In the shooter’s mission, Alastair Cullen consumes a substance, to which he is addicted, which he claims to calm the inhabitants of that town, an obvious parallel with the two Dragon Age Templars, whose order was controlled in a similar way by the Lyrium. , another drug. Returning to World of Warcraft Classic is a humbling experience. With thousands of hours spent in Azeroth, I’ve defeated intergalactic demon armies and thwarted orc hordes from alternate timelines all while amassing the most powerful gear the universe has ever known. But Classic makes braving a cave filled with level 12 troggs feel like a massive achievement. It’s not so much a nostalgia trip as it is a nostalgia fall into a pit of rusty razor blades. And, dammit, I kind of like it that way.

It was honestly shocking to see how common those game-breaking, ultra-capitalist offers were, and how impossible it was to find anyone else within my level range who wanted to conquer those trials the old-fashioned way. Any chance of progressing through Classic as it was intended has been derailed. For the foreseeable future, levels 1-59 are essentially irrelevant, which isn’t good news for me.

Obviously, since this is a game from 2004, there are some blemishes. The graphics aren’t that great, and getting from one place to another before you collect enough gold to buy a mount can take a very long time. There’s a lot of waiting in WoW Classic, whether we’re talking about travel times or waiting for unique enemies to respawn, but for me, that’s part of the charm.

Even if Classic shrinks dramatically, the overwhelming response at launch should communicate two important points to designers of the modern game: World of Warcraft has played a huge role in people’s lives for 15 years, creating the kind of nostalgia typically limited to childhood hometown haunts. And players really like a World of Warcraft that is difficult enough for progress to feel rewarding when it’s made, and which forces the people around them to actually reach out, group up, and be civil. Both lessons could find a home, in some form, in decisions made about the direction of the modern game.

WoW Classic

The trade-off is that Classic is an enormous investment of time with no guaranteed reward. I can spend an hour searching for a group to run a dungeon, only to have everything fall apart if our team can’t coordinate properly. But I actually prefer just how intimidating this Classic version of Azeroth feels. There’s a renewed sense of danger and adventure to zones that I’ve already spent hundreds of hours exploring, and it requires that I pay attention to my surroundings at all times unless I want to become dinner to a family of panthers. It makes Azeroth feel new again. I rarely feel like I’m on autopilot while I’m playing—except during those occasional 20-minute hikes to nearby zones.

World of Warcraft Classic does everything it set out to do. It recreates a faithful snapshot of a moment in time, the 1.12 patch in vanilla WoW, with a few engineering conveniences quietly built in. I’ve also seen a few signs of better player behavior bleeding over into the modern game. What happens next is impossible to guess, but this is the sort of fascinating experiment that helps root out what people love in a game, and what might make them come back. And that data is worth its weight in gold, both fictional and otherwise.

For whatever problems a 15-year-old game may have, WoW Classic is still a wonderful experience. There’s nothing quite like exploring huge cities packed with other players like Orgrimmar or Stormwind, questing through all the different zones in Azeroth, or even just grouping up with some friends to go gank some unsuspecting Alliance players. Even with all of the additional content released over the years taken away, there’s still a ton to do in WoW Classic.

The Outriders demo patch adds a motion blur toggle

Outriders may end up having the most patched early test demo in recent memory as they try to quickly address issues that fans are bringing up ahead of full release. And a new patch is going live today that does not mess around with legendary drop rates any more, or really farming of any kind.

The Outriders demo patch adds a motion blur toggle, makes matchmaking improvements, applies bug fixes, and applies crash resolutions.

What is motion blur? Motion blur comes from photography, is used in games with fast movements, often in shooters, racing games and action adventures.

The full Outriders demo update 1.05 patch notes can be found below straight from the Outriders Twitter feed:

Some stuff I feel like it’s easy to see should be coming at some point, like a button to lock gear and prevent it from being dismantled. Just basic stuff like that. I would imagine another patch or two before release on April 1 here, and then of course, continued patches after that, because even if we’re not a “live service” game here, that’s still just how games work. But if a big game can launch not completely broken in this day and age, that gives it a leg up on about half its competition.

What about the Xbox versions? The Xbox versions should follow soon. There is no more precise date for this yet.

New World was been delayed again and is now due to launch in August

Here’s a recent trend in videogame discourse: now, whenever a game is delayed, the immediate response from a large segment of the audience is, ‘Good – better that it be delayed than be another Cyberpunk‘. CD Projekt Red made such a big mess they’ve inadvertently made life easier for other devleopers!

So it is with New World, the much-delayed MMO from Amazon Games Studios. It’s been delayed again and is now due to launch in August.

The news comes about six months after a preview event involving thousands of players, and lots of feedback and data for developers to gather.

The upshot of that data is that while Amazon Game Studios has polished and expanded the combat system and weapon variety, and added other new features, it’s still not ready to hit its previously announced spring 2021 launch. New World gets another six months of work then, with a closed beta beginning on July 20. Those who have pre-ordered New World will get access to the closed beta.

On top of what players have already seen (including our own Chris), this beta will include an endgame zone with an “exiled empress” (Ebonscale Reach), five-player instanced PvE dungeons (Expeditions), and a 20v20 Outpust Rush mode in which teams clash over strongholds in a “primordial river basin.”

Amazon Games Studios have had a lot of bad press recently, with multiple reports of dysfunction explaining the failure and cancellation of the megacorp’s other games, including MOBA Breakaway and hero shooter Crucible. Amazon say they’re not going to give up, but New World is their only remaining announced game.

Despite those other flops, and the frequent delays to New World, I don’t think this game is circling the drain. There is an appetite for MMOs of this scale and almost no one else is making new games like this. I’ve also read positive feedback from folks who played it during one beta or another. I can picture New World launching to modest success and having enough momentum to keep updating, at least.

New World was one of the first three PC games that Amazon Game Studios announced it was developing, back at TwitchCon 2016. Of the other two, Breakaway (a multiplayer brawler) was canceled during development, and Crucible (a free-to-play multiplayer shooter) launched in beta last year before its studio announced development would end in October.

New World boasts 50-on-50, siege-style combat set in a fictionalized continent resembling the one conquered by European explorers in the 1500s and 1600s. With such a premise raising eyebrows, Amazon Game Studios has repeatedly pointed out that it is not intending to make a historical presentation; supernatural, nonhuman forces form the PvE adversaries, and player factions will be according to rival guilds (or “companies”) rather than nationalities.

EA has announced what to expect in the second update for Franchise Mode

After Madden NFL 21 brought minimal updates to franchise mode at launch, the community pounded on the studio’s digital door, demanding more meaningful updates to the popular mode. The studio promised to “fix franchise” as its community requested, with the first update hitting last November. That initial update added things like X-Factor and Superstar ability customization, revamped player card stats, more balanced progression, and an easier way to get a glimpse of the playoff picture. The next update continues down the path of righting the franchise ship by improving CPU draft logic and adding more commissioner tools

EA has announced what to expect in the second update for Franchise Mode. This is detailed out in the Gridiron Notes for the game. These look to be a slew of smaller updates to improve the overall experience. The first change comes in lieu of CPU QB Draft Logic. The new logic will help teams decide if they need to draft a QB in the first round. This came directly from community feedback where rookie QBs ultimately got replaced after their first season simply due to the OVR being lower than an incoming prospect.
