The seed to the world of Minecraft’s fabled Herobrine has been discovered.
The seed was found last month by andrew_555, aka Kminster, who kicked off their search on 5th September, 2020. Kminster admitted it “probably about 50 hours in total for developing/writing the code”, but eventually stumbled upon the world on 16th January.
Herobrine is alleged to be a character that spawns in single-player mode, performing strange rituals like carving tunnels and hacking leaves from trees. He is distinguishable from the default Minecraft Steve by his white eyes that lack pupils, and odd movements. The creepypasta goes on to speculate that this is the dead brother of Minecraft creator Notch.
Notch, who never had a brother, and his game, which doesn’t include a character called Herobrine, have benefitted from the story, however, as many players racked up hours searching for him.
What is real, however, is the Minecraft world in which Herobrine was first seen. Unfortunately, nobody knew exactly which world it was: Specific Minecraft worlds, as we explain here, can be perfectly recreated with “seeds,” but if you don’t know the seed, you’re pretty much out of luck. It is possible to crunch the numbers to discover specific seeds, though: The Minecraft title screen seed was discovered in July 2020, and the Pack.png seed was dug up a few months later. And now, as detailed at Minecraft@Home, the original Herobrine seed has been discovered as well.
If you’re unfamiliar with what Minecraft “world seeds” are, they’re basically a series of codes that allow a user to perfectly replicate an in-game Minecraft map. So, now that the world seed has been recovered for the map in which Herobrine was first allegedly seen, players can use the world seed to delve into the map for themselves.
To visit yourself here are the details, although note you’ll need Minecraft Java Edition with “historical versions” activated. Select version a1.0.16 and use this information, or download this prepared world file (thanks, PC Gamer):
Seed: 478868574082066804
Version: Java Alpha 1.0.16_02

The discovery has been attributed to Minecraft@Home’s andrew_555 (Kminster). Fans on this thread are still looking for the original seed used in the first-ever trailer for Minecraft.
