Well, that was a little unexpected and it might seem a bit early, but it looks like now that they’ve announced the release date – which, admittedly, isn’t that far off – for Aion Classic, they’re really ready to get things going. So, starting today, following the standard Aion server maintenance, those interested in getting a taste of old school Aion can take a leap, choosing their server, creating a character and reserving their name.
Last fall, NCsoft announced a new classic mode for the Korean Aion servers. It was a huge success that brought the game back from a major slump, as our recent dips into the company’s revenue reports shows. “Aion more than doubled its revenues from its low point in 2020, almost entirely, NCsoft says, due to the launch of Aion Classic,” we wrote in February. “Huh, Classic servers are wildly popular, who knew. (Everybody. Everybody knew.)”
Previously paid, the game then turned to free-to-play to reach many more people – despite the arrival of a cash shop that put off more than one, but with a certain assiduity, it was always possible to win in Arena.
The revelation was made through the title’s official Twitter account. posted a small teaser suggesting the imminent release of the Aion Classic in the West. In it, we can see a clock that goes in the opposite direction and takes us back to 2009, when the original version of Aion was released in North America, Europe and Oceania. There are still no details.
Classic won’t officially release until June 23, so technically there’s a fair amount of time to finish character creation. Of course, we have no idea how popular the classic server will be. So there’s a chance that you won’t need to do the initial character creation and still get your preferred server and name. (I’m sure I’m the only one on MMOBomb who’s a little excited about this.)
Since then, players in the west have been anxiously waiting to see whether NCsoft would bring the classic servers westward too. It’s looking pretty good, if the tease dropped on Aion’s official Twitter account today is any judge; there’s no hard declaration, but the video teaser shows a clock motif, winding back all the way from 2020 (yes) to 2009, which is the year the game launched in North America, Europe, and Oceania.
